The patina is a thin layer of color created on the finished bronze surface by treating it with various chemicals, and sometimes also with the heat of a gas torch.
A countless number of hues can be generated, depending on the chemical and procedure used--everything from black and reddish-brown to green and aqua. After the patina is complete, a layer of wax is added to seal and protect the piece.
